Q - Can I dim LED's with the Futronix range of Products?

A -
Some led's work ok on the Futronix system with no problems. It is the same scenario as with using incorrect lighting transformers, the dimmer will not dim properly or the transformers will fail. It is no different for a dimmable led except that the GU10 types have the transformer integral to the lamp, some information below on Futronix testing:

LED’s and transformers below have been tested on Futronix dimmer range from Domestic and Commercial systems.

NOTE: the P50 Dimmer unit does not work with LED’s.

The list below shows minimum, maximum load either from our tests or from the manufacturers recommendation and is based on bench testing only. The true data for industrial and domestic installations can only be collected over time. Please help us by letting us know how many led’s you have fitted and their performance to:  technical@futronix.com.

NOTE: Any incompatibilities we find are listed and are our honest appraisal. This is not to say that the transformers/ LED's will not function with a different type of dimmer.

From the bench testing to date it appears that GU10 dimmable led lamps generate the least amount of mechanical noise.

  1. Kosnic LED KLED05 DIM/ GU10/ TLED-GU10SW/ WW/ DIM
Minimum  load  2 x 5W LED in a circuit
Maximum load  6 x 5W LED in a circuit

  1. Bell Mini Dimmable 5W LED GU10 Code 05136
Minimum  load  2 x 5W LED in a circuit
Maximum load 12 x 5W LED in a circuit

  1. Bell Dimmable 7W LED GU10
Minimum  load  1 x 7W LED in a circuit
Maximum load 30 x 7W LED in a circuit

  1. Ledtek Dimmable GU10
Does not dim properly and flickers at low levels

  1. Megaman Energy saving LED reflector PAR16 8W
LR1108D-50H35D
Manufacturer recommends minimum 2 and maximum 7 per circuit

  1. Philips Master LEDspot MR16 LV dimmable 10W
Tested on various Futronix compatible transformers and found to be very noisy when dimmed and flickers. OK for ON/OFF only.

  1. Halers Evoled H2/2300
Customer feedback on use with P800
“The only problem is if you select or programme the circuit to a low
level say up to 15-20 out of 63, then all the lights on the circuit
will not light, if the circuit was not already on.  If it was on at a higher
level, then no problem it will change to the lower set dimmable level.
It just means you have to select the circuit on first, prior to
selecting low light levels.”

8. PowerPax 700ma dimmable transformer (not earlier Multidim range which have not been tested)
Tested on various dimmers and found to flash at low levels. Dimming function found to be non linear.  Not recommended for any Futronix system.

  1. Mean Well ELN30-12D
No problems found when dimming LED 12v strips using P800 1-10v control and power switched by mains output in ON/OFF mode (effectively 2 circuits used). Only 1 transformer tested. It is important that the transformer is correctly loaded as a low current load will NOT dim.

  1.  Aurora  Luna PAR16 GU10
Tested on all systems and found to flicker at undefined levels and got progressively worse when more added to circuit.  Not recommended for any Futronix system other than for ON/OFF control

  11.Aurora AU-LEDD7010CC 10W 700ma Dimmable Constant Current LED Driver
Tested as single and 4 lamps on P100, P400, P800 and Enviroscene/PFX. Worked well with good dimming level control and minimum flicker at low levels.  On “P” series brightness level changes do not seem so noticeable after level 50. On Enviroscene /PFX good range of brightness level setting available on settings above level 10.

12. Aurora AU-LEDD3510CC  10W 350ma Dimmable Constant Current LED Driver
Tested as single and 4 lamps on P100, P400, P800 and Enviroscene/PFX. Worked well with good dimming level control and minimum flicker at low levels..  On “P” series brightness level changes do not seem so noticeable after level 50. On Enviroscene /PFX good range of brightness level setting available on settings above level 10.

Both of the above Aurora transformers tested together on same and separate circuits on dimmers (2 x 4 lamps and 1 x 8 lamps loading) Performance not affected.
  1. Aurora AU-FRLD913  SOLA Integrated LED 9W (uses AU-ALDD7010 transformer)
Tested on all systems and found to flicker at undefined levels. Not recommended for any Futronix system.  Transformer is probable cause of problem. Lamp may work better with different transformer.
  1. Hamilton DIM700mA/18W 6-26V
Tested 1-5 on P400, P800 and Enviroscene/PFX and found to work ok. Only reservation that transformer is quite mechanically noisy at low to medium dimming levels and therefore we would recommend testing samples in ceiling before using.
  1. Cube Lighting Flip LED. FLR3/50/W7/30/WH Purple Snowflake 30 deg White.
Tested 1-5 on P400, P800 and Enviroscene/PFX  using Hamilton DIM700mA/18W 6-26V transformers. Worked ok but transformers quite mechanically noisy. Please note these LED lamp did NOT generate any mechanical noise in use. The noise was limited to Hamilton transformers only.
  1. MODE LED-PSU Model PSU-24V-700-239-RD
Tested 1-5 on all systems. Found that lamp dimming not linear and when 5 transformers were on the same circuit there was a high level of audible mechanical noise. Not recommended for any Futronix system

17. Power LED Model PCC70018TD 6-26V
Tested one transformer only. Found to work ok.  Only reservation that transformer is quite mechanically noisy at low to medium dimming levels and therefore we would recommend testing samples in ceiling before using.
  1. Deltalight DC JOLLY MD transformer
Tested one transformer only with the Deltalight Reo ok S1/S2 light fitting 8W 11.7v flickers at all levels and dimming non linear. The same light fitting worked ok with an Aurora AU-LEDD7010CC transformer though.

19.  LIGHTECH LED-28-700-240-TB (output: 5.6v - 29v)
Single transformer tested on Enviroscene, P400 and P800 with a single, three led cluster, 700ma lamp. Mechanically it was reasonably quiet and a slight buzz could be heard at a short distance. The dimming results were not that good as the transformer seemed to take time to settle once the dimming level was reached. For example, if you set a low level around 10-15% the lamp would light brightly for an instant and then dim to the set level, maybe taking a few seconds to stabilise. At some dimming levels there was not much change in brightness and dimming to off from full on seemed to be slightly more stepped than smooth. I did not notice any major flickering and the lamp turned completely off on the three dimmers tested (some lamps flicker in the OFF state).
