Futronix Remote Lighting - FAQ's

Any further queries, please email sales@theinternetelectricalstore.com or call us on 0800 043 5532.

Q - Can I dim LED's with the Futronix range of Products?

A -
Some led's work ok on the Futronix system with no problems. It is the same scenario as with using incorrect lighting transformers, the dimmer will not dim properly or the transformers will fail. It is no different for a dimmable led except that the GU10 types have the transformer integral to the lamp, some information below on Futronix testing:

LED’s and transformers below have been tested on Futronix dimmer range from Domestic and Commercial systems.

NOTE: the P50 Dimmer unit does not work with LED’s.

The list below shows minimum, maximum load either from our tests or from the manufacturers recommendation and is based on bench testing only. The true data for industrial and domestic installations can only be collected over time. Please help us by letting us know how many led’s you have fitted and their performance to:  technical@futronix.com.

NOTE: Any incompatibilities we find are listed and are our honest appraisal. This is not to say that the transformers/ LED's will not function with a different type of dimmer.

From the bench testing to date it appears that GU10 dimmable led lamps generate the least amount of mechanical noise.

  1. Kosnic LED KLED05 DIM/ GU10/ TLED-GU10SW/ WW/ DIM
Minimum  load  2 x 5W LED in a circuit
Maximum load  6 x 5W LED in a circuit

  1. Bell Mini Dimmable 5W LED GU10 Code 05136
Minimum  load  2 x 5W LED in a circuit
Maximum load 12 x 5W LED in a circuit

  1. Bell Dimmable 7W LED GU10
Minimum  load  1 x 7W LED in a circuit
Maximum load 30 x 7W LED in a circuit

  1. Ledtek Dimmable GU10
Does not dim properly and flickers at low levels

  1. Megaman Energy saving LED reflector PAR16 8W
LR1108D-50H35D
Manufacturer recommends minimum 2 and maximum 7 per circuit

  1. Philips Master LEDspot MR16 LV dimmable 10W
Tested on various Futronix compatible transformers and found to be very noisy when dimmed and flickers. OK for ON/OFF only.

  1. Halers Evoled H2/2300
Customer feedback on use with P800
“The only problem is if you select or programme the circuit to a low
level say up to 15-20 out of 63, then all the lights on the circuit
will not light, if the circuit was not already on.  If it was on at a higher
level, then no problem it will change to the lower set dimmable level.
It just means you have to select the circuit on first, prior to
selecting low light levels.”

8. PowerPax 700ma dimmable transformer (not earlier Multidim range which have not been tested)
Tested on various dimmers and found to flash at low levels. Dimming function found to be non linear.  Not recommended for any Futronix system.

  1. Mean Well ELN30-12D
No problems found when dimming LED 12v strips using P800 1-10v control and power switched by mains output in ON/OFF mode (effectively 2 circuits used). Only 1 transformer tested. It is important that the transformer is correctly loaded as a low current load will NOT dim.

  1.  Aurora  Luna PAR16 GU10
Tested on all systems and found to flicker at undefined levels and got progressively worse when more added to circuit.  Not recommended for any Futronix system other than for ON/OFF control

  11.Aurora AU-LEDD7010CC 10W 700ma Dimmable Constant Current LED Driver
Tested as single and 4 lamps on P100, P400, P800 and Enviroscene/PFX. Worked well with good dimming level control and minimum flicker at low levels.  On “P” series brightness level changes do not seem so noticeable after level 50. On Enviroscene /PFX good range of brightness level setting available on settings above level 10.

12. Aurora AU-LEDD3510CC  10W 350ma Dimmable Constant Current LED Driver
Tested as single and 4 lamps on P100, P400, P800 and Enviroscene/PFX. Worked well with good dimming level control and minimum flicker at low levels..  On “P” series brightness level changes do not seem so noticeable after level 50. On Enviroscene /PFX good range of brightness level setting available on settings above level 10.

Both of the above Aurora transformers tested together on same and separate circuits on dimmers (2 x 4 lamps and 1 x 8 lamps loading) Performance not affected.
  1. Aurora AU-FRLD913  SOLA Integrated LED 9W (uses AU-ALDD7010 transformer)
Tested on all systems and found to flicker at undefined levels. Not recommended for any Futronix system.  Transformer is probable cause of problem. Lamp may work better with different transformer.
  1. Hamilton DIM700mA/18W 6-26V
Tested 1-5 on P400, P800 and Enviroscene/PFX and found to work ok. Only reservation that transformer is quite mechanically noisy at low to medium dimming levels and therefore we would recommend testing samples in ceiling before using.
  1. Cube Lighting Flip LED. FLR3/50/W7/30/WH Purple Snowflake 30 deg White.
Tested 1-5 on P400, P800 and Enviroscene/PFX  using Hamilton DIM700mA/18W 6-26V transformers. Worked ok but transformers quite mechanically noisy. Please note these LED lamp did NOT generate any mechanical noise in use. The noise was limited to Hamilton transformers only.
  1. MODE LED-PSU Model PSU-24V-700-239-RD
Tested 1-5 on all systems. Found that lamp dimming not linear and when 5 transformers were on the same circuit there was a high level of audible mechanical noise. Not recommended for any Futronix system

17. Power LED Model PCC70018TD 6-26V
Tested one transformer only. Found to work ok.  Only reservation that transformer is quite mechanically noisy at low to medium dimming levels and therefore we would recommend testing samples in ceiling before using.
  1. Deltalight DC JOLLY MD transformer
Tested one transformer only with the Deltalight Reo ok S1/S2 light fitting 8W 11.7v flickers at all levels and dimming non linear. The same light fitting worked ok with an Aurora AU-LEDD7010CC transformer though.

19.  LIGHTECH LED-28-700-240-TB (output: 5.6v - 29v)
Single transformer tested on Enviroscene, P400 and P800 with a single, three led cluster, 700ma lamp. Mechanically it was reasonably quiet and a slight buzz could be heard at a short distance. The dimming results were not that good as the transformer seemed to take time to settle once the dimming level was reached. For example, if you set a low level around 10-15% the lamp would light brightly for an instant and then dim to the set level, maybe taking a few seconds to stabilise. At some dimming levels there was not much change in brightness and dimming to off from full on seemed to be slightly more stepped than smooth. I did not notice any major flickering and the lamp turned completely off on the three dimmers tested (some lamps flicker in the OFF state).

Q - How do I programme or re-programme the Varilight YRC8 unit?

A -  The instructions are as follows :

Dimmers with an "eye" in the middleof the sensor are pre- programmed to respond to button 1 and button 8 on the varilight remote control handset. Alternatively , the dimmers with a "eye" in the middle of the sensor can be programmed to respond to any of the buttons 1 to 7 varilight remote control handset or any button on the remote control handet you have at home already. If there is a button that you do not currently use then you can use it to control the dimmer by following steps carefully.

1. To set the dimmer into learning mode, after it is initalized, tap the sensor 6 times, roughly once per second.( each tap causes the light to turn on or off. After 6 taps on the sensor the light will step up and down once and go off.

2. Within 15 seconds and from a distance of less than 1 meter (3 feet) away, pointing directly at the "eye" press and hold down the chosen button, releasing after holding the button down for at least 2 seconds. The light(s) will turn off and on.

3. To confirm your choice, press and hold down the same button again releasing after holding the button down again for at least 2 seconds. If the programming has been successful, the light will turn on and off. The light then step up and down once to confirm. Try controlling the dimmer with the remote control. If it does not respond return to step 1 above and try agiain. If the problem persists , try a different button, a different remote control unit or purchase the Varilight controller.

4. You can now use this button on the remote control to operate the dimmer. As with the touch sensor, a single touch on the remote control button will turn the light(s) on and off. Holding the button down will make the brightness cycle up and down. To change the direction of the of the dimming cycle remove contact and then press the button again. Release contact from the button when the desired light level is reached. The dimmer can still operated using the touch sensor.

5. For 2 gang models, repeat steps 1 to 4 for each sensor, teaching each one a different button so you can control each one separately. You can change your choice of control button by following steps 1 to 4 again at any time.

Q - What is a Master & Slave?

A - The Master is the remote dimmer with an Infra-red eye, the Slave is used in a secondary location.

Q - Can a 4 Gang, 3 Gang and 2 Gang switch be supplied with a combination of Master, Slave & Normal 2 Way Switches?

A - Yes - by special order only. Special order switches are bespoke, manufactured to order and non refundable. If you are interested, give us a call on Freephone 0800 043 5532

Q - Is it normal for the dimmer to be warm to to the touch even when the lights are switched off?

A - Yes this is completely normal as a small current will still pass through the dimmer when it is off to maintain its memory function. This mean that the dimmer may still feel warm when touched.

Q - Should I be worried if the dimmer light switch is very warm during operation?

A - This is completely normal, the dimmer will become warm during use. The more lights that the dimmer is powering, the hotter the switch plate will become. On its maximum load, such as 400w or 600w the dimmer can become very warm, as long as the dimmer is not overloaded, there is no need to concern. There is an automatic function where if the dimmer is overloaded, it will turn down the lights or off as it has an intelligent micro-processor.

Q - What happens if I have a Power cut or I turn off the main power in the property?

A - The remote control will remember the button previously programmed to.

Q - Why won't my dimmer respond to the remote control?

A - Sounds obvious, but check that batteries are working, plus make sure the contact points in the handset are making contact and functional. Make sure the remote control is used with the remote touch or eclique dimmers as these are remote control only, not the rotary dimmers. Make sure the remote is pointed in the general direction of the switch, remembering it is a line of sight product and won't work through walls.

Finally try moving closer to the switch, the range will deteorate the more drained the batteries become.

Q - The lights are turned up fully, but seem to be working at less than full brightness?

A - Sometimes the lighting circuit can be drawing too much current, the dimmer will attempt to handle this overload by reducing the brightness of the lamps. It can also occur when certain types of bulb age.

Q - The Remote Dimmer Switch keeps turning itself off?

A - This is likely because the dimmer is grossly overloaded, therefore use lower wattage bulbs or dimmable electronic transformers to reduce the load. Also consider upgrading the dimmer, we have 1000 watt dimmers available.

The dimmer also has a safety overload protection device so if you are trying to control an unsuitable inductive load (wire-wound / torrodial transformer) then it will malfunction and the dimmer will try to correct the load. Change the transformer to resolve this.

See the NEW YRC8 and a NEW video showing all of the above.

Varilight Designer Rocker Light Switches

Varilight Designer Rocker Light Switches

Rocker Light Switches are an int
egral part of any household and there are currently billions in operation globally. It is hard to imagine how this all began in Newcastle, in 1884, when John Henry Holmes developed the first light switch. It was an innovative design at the time as it introduced the new 'quick break' technology which allowed the electricity to the bulb to be ceased and supplied almost instantly.

Unlike previous switches, this was both safer and more convenient for the domestic dwelling and became instantly popular. From this a plethora of electrical switches came into production, but the Rocker Light Switch has maintained its place as the firm favourite throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
Varilight rocker light switches are known worldwide for the build & design quality, with over 4,000 products they are a leading manufacturer of light switches & plug sockets.
It is generally designed to fit flush against a wall, with the surrounding wall plate installed as a safety feature. The wall plate provides effective protection against electrical shocks in the event the switch came into contact with water. But as the market has increased, the wall plate has also become a design feature, with many stylish and innovative materials being implemented to provide a finish that suits every home.
From the standard white plate, there are now a variety of metals and colours to cater to your needs. Mirror Chrome and Glass plates are ideal for the modern room, spacious and uncluttered, especially if you are aiming for a minimalistic look. For the more traditional home, you may prefer the Pewter, Stainless Steel or Brass range to complement your rooms. For the more daring colour schemes, why not try Black, Mocha or Graphite plates to provide a talking point for your living area. Whatever your needs there are Rocker Light Switch plates available to achieve the look you desire.
The design of the plate is also important, as you can now choose from screwless and ultra-flat design, through to a variety of Gang formats. With such a range of materials and formats it is easy to install Rocker Light Switches throughout the home without comprising on style and variety. The popularity of this type of switch comes not only from the range of design available, but the proven long-life of the product and its suitability for both mains and low voltage lighting.

Varilight - LED Dimmer Switches - Wholesale ease of use

Dimming for a brighter future

Andrew Wilson, Marketing Manager at Varilight, explains why the launch of the V-Pro dimmer series presents an opportunity for wholesalers by simplifying the process of selecting a dimmer for specifiers and installers.

Customer feedback suggests that many specifiers and installers yearn for the halcyon days when a light bulb was a light bulb and a dimmer was a dimmer as they struggle to get to grips with the vast array of energy saving lamps that are on offer.

Whilst customers appreciate choice (especially technologies that save money without compromising on control), many are understandably confused about compatibility between the new lamps and the transformers, drivers and dimmers available in an increasingly complex market.

A clear opportunity exists for wholesalers who can confidently recommend compatible dimmer switches to encourage installers to trade up by embracing the brave new world of energy saving lighting.

Keep it simple

Having spent 40 years manufacturing dimmer switches in the UK we have developed a good understanding of the market and the benefits to our customers of keeping things simple.

This has often meant reaching beyond the dimmer itself to offer comprehensive dimmable solutions. For example our dimmable low voltage transformers solve a problem for electricians keen to avoid dimmer compatibility issues and numerous return visits to site. In the same way our award winning dimmable CFLs were a world-first, introducing full brightness control to energy saving lighting. But it doesn’t stop there because we are aiming to further simplify the selection process with the addition of more dimmable LED solutions to the portfolio later this year.

In short we have recognised the need for a simplified proposition and as a result we have developed a new dimmer capable of controlling both traditional lighting and the new generation of dimmable energy saving lighting.

Professional dimming

The Varilight V-Pro intelligent dimmer series offers the closest thing to a one-size-fits-all solution for dimming today’s plethora of lighting technologies and diverse light sources. Featuring sophisticated load detection technology, V-Pro dimmers are well equipped to control a wide variety of loads, including dimmable LEDs. Even if a more conventional load is specified now, selecting a V-Pro dimmer will enable customers to seamlessly switch to dimmable LEDs at a later stage.

V-Pro dimmers take their place in a streamlined range of three principal dimmer series which include V-Dim, V-Plus and V-Pro and each series is available across the multitude of Varilight decorative finishes which include the contemporary Brushed Steel through to the classical Georgian Brass.

New range

As I mentioned before, selecting the correct dimmer can be a very confusing area and therefore we have tried to keep things simple with our new product range. Our entry level leading-edge V-Dim has the capability to control conventional lighting including Varilight transformers powering low voltage halogen lights. With V-Plus, intelligence is added to leading-edge dimming with the addition of features such as intelligent overload protection and soft start for extended lamp life. With high wattage dimmers available, the V-Plus series is the ideal choice for large loads and is specifically tuned for low voltage dichroic systems, including inductive loads.

Our most advance dimming technology yet comes in the shape of the V-Pro Eclipse touch/remote control trailing-edge dimmer which provides a superb dimming performance for a wide variety of lighting loads including dimmable LEDs. In addition, intelligent load detection combines with ultra smooth trailing-edge technology for optimum lighting control and low noise operation, eliminating ‘dimmer buzz’.

The V-Pro series also includes the new minimalist Eclipse Master Dimmer which has hidden remote control detection behind a circular touch button backlit with a subtle blue LED. Behind the scenes, V-Pro intelligent load-detection technology provides the ultimate in dimming performance and versatility with smooth dimming to very low levels even with dimmable LED lamps. It is even possible to dim from multiple switch locations using one or more Eclipse Dimming Slaves with an Eclipse Master Dimmer.

Like all V-Pro dimmers, the Eclipse series offers excellent control for low loads (such as those presented by dimmable CFLs and LEDs) and superior protection to guard against the problems associated with the failure of some mains halogen lamps. V-Pro dimmers will also happily function with loads that require trailing-edge or leading-edge control making them suitable for dimmable electronic low voltage transformers. Intelligent overload and short-circuit protection are supplied as standard with soft start for improved lamp life.

Dimmable lighting

Even the most advanced dimmer will not be able to perform at its best if the lighting load itself is not dimmable and a significant problem for customers wanting to dim energy saving lighting is that the majority of CFLs and LEDs on offer cannot be dimmed at all. Furthermore, many of those that describe themselves as dimmable present a disappointing range of brightness, or exhibit flicker and strobing effects when paired with a standard dimmer.

An end user who is replacing incandescent or halogen lamps with dimmable CFLs or LEDs will be used to a range and quality of control that may not be replicated when their existing dimmer is presented with the new energy saving load. Selecting truly dimmable lighting is therefore as important as choosing the correct dimmer

Unfortunately there is now a huge array of new entrants supplying CFLs and LEDs into the UK market. As a result, the overwhelming number of lamps available can make selection challenging so it does pay to work with a manufacturer that you can trust who will take the guesswork out of compatibility and performance issues.

Guaranteed compatibility

It is clear that the role of the dimmer switch manufacturer has changed significantly. It is no longer sufficient to supply reliable, high performance dimmers to the market without considering the need to develop dimmable lighting that can be guaranteed as compatible.

This is one of the main reasons why our focus remains on producing the most comprehensive range of dimmer switches available and why we will continue to work with leading lighting manufacturers as they develop new lamps.

If you take all of this into account then it is perhaps unsurprising that there has been an overwhelming level of interest in both the V-Pro push-on/off, rotary dimmer and the new V-Pro Eclipse touch/remote control dimmer, which was short-listed for the 2012 Lighting Design Awards.

We have always thrived on new challenges and that has earned us a strong reputation for bringing innovation to the market. Reaching the finals of the Lighting Design Awards has therefore given us a great platform to publicise what we believe to be ground breaking technology.

If we look to the future it is clear that demanding loads such as dimmable LEDs are set to become increasingly popular as replacements for conventional lighting and therefore it is important that installers choose a dimmer which can be tailored to the characteristics of the load. But more importantly this technology will allow them to future-proof any installation ensuring that it meets the demands now as well as in many years to come.

JCC Lighting adds an exciting new LED fire-rated downlight to its Fireguard range

http://www.theinternetelectricalstore.com/jcc-lighting-products-415-c.asp

JCC Lighting has launched Fireguard LED7, a fire-rated downlight foLinkr both residential and commercial applications that uses the latest energy efficient LEDs as a light source. The high light output and performance of the 7W LEDs are equivalent to a 50W halogen lamp, offering energy savings of over 80% against halogens.

JCC has combined eight years’ experience in fire-rated lighting with state-of-the-art LED technology to deliver an energy efficient, high quality, fully-tested LED downlight. The LED output exceeds the 400 lumens and 45 lumens/circuit watt efficacy target required by Part L of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. The downlight contains six LED chips and its unique lens design gives a smooth, even spread of light with a 38 degree beam angle in line with halogen equivalents.

Fire safety comes first

JCC’s Fireguard range offers peace of mind over fire safety issues. Most downlights have an open back and offer no seal or protection to the ceiling in the event of a fire. This means that the downlight’s cut out hole has broken the fire-rating of the ceiling and heat and flames would be able to spread into upper floors. The JCC Fireguard range utilises a fire-resistant, all-metal enclosed can which ensures that flammable dust and debris doesn’t build up through the life of the fitting. This follows the guidelines issued by the Electrical Safety Council in its recent Downlighters and Fire Safety report.

All JCC fire-rated downlights include the added protection of a seal to the ceiling cut out and additional intumescent material to the back of the product which swells to seal any ventilation gaps in the event of a fire. JCC’s patented thermoplastic intumescent plug has a petal design that provides improved ventilation to maintain the life of the light source and swells up to 80 times under extreme temperature conditions to seal the back of the fitting should a fire break out.

Fireguard LED7 has been designed to be easily retrofitted into existing downlight installations. An integral LED driver allows like-for-like replacement of both low voltage or mains voltage halogen units and the dimmable version can be used with a wide variety of standard dimmers. A wide bezel allows for damage to the cut-out hole on removal of the old fitting. The bezel is cast metal and the finishes include brushed nickel, which matches the current trend for brushed metal switch and socket plates.

Easy installation

No tools are required once the hole is cut in the ceiling. The loop in / loop out connections and push-in terminal blocks mean that Fireguard LED7 is quick and easy to install. Adjustable ceiling clips ensure that it can easily be fitted into different ceiling thicknesses. The added reassurance of the 75,000 hours lamp life and 10 year warranty makes Fireguard LED7 a fit-and-forget product.

Fireguard LED7 is available in both cool and warm white colour temperatures so you can choose the best colour for any application. The cool white version has an output of 450 lumens and an efficacy of 55-60 lumens/circuit Watt. The high performance and colour temperature options makes Fireguard LED7 ideal for both residential and commercial applications, including hotels, restaurants and retail outlets. It is also IP65 rated as standard and therefore suitable for installation in bathrooms and shower rooms.

VARILIGHT® Eclipse Remote/Touch Control Intelligent Trailing-Edge Dimmers (V-Pro)

V-Pro Eclipse dimmers feature tactile touch and infra-red remote control. The infra-red signal is received via a clear ring that surrounds the touch button, which also provides for the attractive LED backlighting, adding to the elegance of the product. The gentle blue ring of light also serves to help to locate the touch button in the dark.

Intelligent overload protection, short circuit protection and, most importantly, V-Pro intelligent load detection make this dimmer extremely versatile. It is able to adapt to achieve the best possible dimming performance for the lighting load. V-Pro dimmers are suitable for controlling many dimmable LEDs (Philips and Toshiba recommended), dimmable CFLs, electronic low voltage transformers, mains halogen and GLS lighting.

Full functionality can be achieved by choosing the Varilight® remote control handset, including a master control function which will switch several dimmers on and off simultaneously, enabling the user to recall the previous levels or "scene". In addition, Eclipse dimmers are capable of learning to respond to a spare button on many existing infra-red remote control handsets.

One-gang Eclipse master dimmers are rated from 10W-400W and two-gang versions up to 2 x 10W-250W. Eclipse dimming slaves are also available to be used alongside a master dimmer for two-way and multi-way control, enabling lights to be switched and dimmed from multiple locations.
For best results with low voltage lighting use VARILIGHT electronic transformers.

V-Pro Eclipse Touch/Remote Control Dimmers

Taken from Varilight News: http://www.varilightnews.blogspot.com

Eclipse TM is the stylish touch/remote-control addition to Varilight's V-Pro TM range of trailing-edge dimmers, featuring a blue LED-backlit metal touch button with tactile touch and infra-red remote control. Clever design allows the infra-red signal to be received via a clear ring that surrounds the touch button, which also provides for the attractive LED backlighting, adding to the elegance of the product. The gentle blue ring of light also serves to help to locate the touch button in the dark.

The V-Pro TM dimmer range features intelligent overload protection, short circuit protection and, most importantly, V-Pro TM intelligent load detection. This makes the dimmer extremely versatile because it is able to adapt in response to the lighting load to achieve the best possible dimming performance. V-Pro TM dimmers are suitable for controlling dimmable LEDs, dimmable CFLs, electronic low voltage transformers, mains halogen and traditional mains GLS lighting.

With the prospect of householders increasingly replacing traditional lamps with energy-efficient alternatives, and LEDs in particular, installations can effectively be made "LED-ready". Even if LEDs are not part of an existing lighting scheme, by choosing to install Varilight's V-Pro TM dimmers, an end-user can decide to switch to dimmable LEDs at a future date without the need to upgrade their dimmers.

Full functionality can be achieved by choosing the Varilight® remote control handset, including a master control function which will switch several dimmers on and off simultaneously, enabling the user to recall the previous light settings or "scene". In addition, Eclipse TM dimmers are capable of learning to respond to a spare button on many existing infra-red remote control handsets.

Offered across Varilight's unrivalled range of decorative faceplate styles and finishes, an Eclipse TM dimmer is available to suit every interior design scheme. One-gang Eclipse TM master dimmers are rated up to 400W and two-gang versions up to 2 x 250W. Eclipse TM dimming slaves are also available to be used alongside a master dimmer for two-way and multi-way control, enabling lights to be switched and dimmed from multiple locations.
